For the second season in a row, Paul Skenes will start on the mound for the National League in the All-Star Game.
Skenes is in his second major league season, and currently one of the favorites for the N.L. Cy Young award. He currently is tied with Zack Wheeler with a 4.8 bWAR, the highest in baseball. His 2.01 ERA is also the best in baseball right now, his 131 strikeouts ranks seventh and he's logged 121 innings this season, the second-most among all big league pitchers.
Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes will become the first pitcher and one of five major league players ever to start in the All-Star Game in each of his first two big-league seasons, along with Joe DiMaggio (seven, 1936-42), Ichiro Suzuki (four, 2001-04), Rod Carew (three, 1967-69) and Frank Robinson (two, 1956-57).
Since he was drafted just two years ago, all Skenes has done is make history. Just last night in a 2-1 loss to the Twins, Skenes secured his 300th career strikeout in his 43rd career start, becoming the first Pirates pitcher and one of only 17 MLB pitchers all-time to accomplish that feat.
